Velocity:
Velocity is the youth leadership team that plans and implements our youth events and ministries. Composed of
youth representatives and adult mentors, Velocity's purpose is to create Christian disciples who are actively engaged in their faith, the
community, and the Church.
Sunday Morning Live (SML):
Sundays from 9:30 - 9:50 a.m. in the Chapel
"Indeed, the body does not consist of one part, but of many… If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored,
all rejoice together with it." - 1 Corinthians 12:14 & 26
Sunday Morning Live meets in the Chapel on Sunday mornings for a community gathering, singing, and praise opportunity for students in grades
7 - 12. Of course, all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend. At 9:50 a.m. our students break into three age-appropriate Christian
development and education groups: Confirmation (grades 7 - 8), Christian Development Class (grades 9 - 10), and Christian
Exploration Class (grades 11 - 12). These groups will meet from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m.
Confirmation:
Confirmation classes are offered year - round for 7th and 8th graders, in a 2 year program. Confirmation is a time when the youth learn more
about their faith, explore what their faith means to them, and learn how to live their faith in the world. Through various classes, retreats,
and activities, the confirmands learn what it means to have been baptized, and confirm their baptism at the end of their eighth grade year.
Christian Development Group (grades 9 - 10):
Sundays from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. in the Fireside Room (F8)
Start your Sunday morning in the chapel with SML and then gather with your friends in 9th and 10th grades for the Christian Development class
from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. This class is student led and guided and mentored by adults, clergy, and staff. This class offers the opportunity
for 9th and 10th grade youth to continue to develop their Christian faith and habits beyond Confirmation and to ask questions in a safe,
supportive, and respectful environment.
Christian Exploration Group (grades 11 - 12):
Sundays from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. in the Youth Lounge (E14)
Start your Sunday morning in the chapel with SML then gather with your friends in 11th and 12th grades for the Christian Exploration class from
10:00 - 10:45 a.m. This group offers the opportunity for senior high youth to engage in discussion of matters of faith in a supportive and
encouraging environment. Although this is an ongoing class, there is no homework or prep required. Questions are encouraged and your opinions
and views will be treated respectfully.
Small Group Opportunities:
Our small groups offer opportunities to experience grace-filled, covenant relationships and to form and develop your faith through discussions
and fellowship with your peers. This is an awesome way to dive more deeply and to explore relevant issues to you and your faith.
Sr. High Boy's Small Group:
This group meets every Monday evening from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the Youth Lounge. If you are a young man in grades 9 - 12, you are
invited to try out this group.
Sr. High Girls's Small Group:
This group meets every Tuesday evening from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the Youth Lounge. If you are a young woman in grades 9 - 12, you
are invited to try out this group.
V.I.B.E. (United Methodist Youth Fellowship):
V.I.B.E. is a time on Sunday evening where students can kick back and have some fun, while still striving to connect God's word to their lives.
From 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. every Sunday night, youth participate in a wide variety of activities, both on and off our church campus.
Music Ministries:
"Sing to Hymn":
Sing to Hymn is our youth praise band. Comprised of students, this praise band plays contemporary Christian music every Sunday at SML, as well
as special opportunities in our worship services and the community. Auditioning is easy....just let us know you are interested!
Youth Choir:
Youth Choir is for students in grades 7-12. The youth choir has the opportunity to lead worship in both the 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship
services several times a year. Additionally, the youth choir occasionally has special performances in the community. The school year
culminates with our annual choir tour, which takes the choir to another part of the country to share Christ through music and to have fun!
Missions:
Missions opportunities provide a way for the youth to give back to their community, and to express their faith through Christian service. Monthly
mission opportunities are offered, as well as several additional short and long-term missions for both junior high and senior high youth. One of
our mission highlights is the annual summer mission trip for our senior high students. We take seriously God's charge of being the hands and
feet of Christ in the world!
Safety:
Keeping students safe and healthy is a job that requires constant vigilance on the part of every adult. At Paradise Valley United Methodist Church,
staff and laity working with youth must submit to background and motor vehicle checks, as well as agreeing to follow specific guidelines for
working with these age groups.
